We live and work around Elephant and Castle and Walworth. We face the challenge of huge development pressure and want to promote a neighbourhood plan to ensure that the benefits of the redevelopment can reach existing residents, existing businesses and existing groups. Based on the Government’s 2011 Localism Act, we have created a neighbourhood forum and applied for designation to take forward neighbourhood planning in the Elephant & Castle and Walworth area. To fit with the requirements of the Localism Act, we have a constitution, a list of members and a map of the proposed boundary area.

Our first application for designation submitted in January 2013. Following extensive consultation we submitted a revised application in 2014, which included some modifications to our boundary area. Since reaching agreement over the revised boundary area, we have been working on the preliminary stages of drawing up our neighbourhood plan across the following four themes:

  • Green Space & Infrastructure
  • Housing
  • Local Business
  • Heritage & Community Assets
The formal consultation period on our application for designation ended in July 2016 and in September 2016, Southwark Council finally approved the designation of the forum and designation of the Walworth Neighbourhood Area for the purposes of neighbourhood planning.

Our main concerns are green space, affordable housing, safe routes for pedestrians and cyclists, supporting local businesses and the community ownership of local assets. We want to look after and improve our existing spaces and facilities as well as create new ones. We want the neighbourhood forum to give us the confidence to share ideas and skills, and to shape our neighbourhood. For more information about the themes we are working on, please see the Working Groups pages from the main menu.
